I’m an MD and I can state unequivocally that I have never heard Trisomy 21 referred to as “Tri-g” or “trig.” Not ever. He’s making this stuff up wholesale.

Normally I would agree with you, Mark. But when a prominent writer employed by a formally-reputable journal refers to a woman’s Down Syndrome child as a “prop” or charges that that woman gave her son the name she did in order to make fun of him, then that prominent writer has to get called out as the steaming pile of Sullivan he has become. I’ll go back to ignoring the bastard later.

I am a physician, specifically a Board Certified OB/GYN, in in private practice for nearly 22 years and with 4 years of OB/GYN residency prior to that. I have never in my training or professional career with its CME requirements, repeat, never, come across the usage of Tri-g as equivalent to Down’s syndrome, Trisomy 21, mongolism, or retarded baby in all those years.

The description retarded baby sounds harsh to politically correct ears as does mongolism. Both are historically used and accurate terms. Just not popular.

All it says is that Trisomy 21 is also Trisomy G. No reference to that made up “slang”.

Hmm. At the very least, then, we can say the phrase is not used “often” in medical terminology. Granted, it’s anecdotal evidence only, but I still say the guy is nuts. And I cannot imagine a mother, any mother, giving her child a name based on medical terminology. It simply doesn’t make sense.

I think Chris and others have it right. This deranged man hates women, and he’s never spent much time around women about to give birth. I don’t know that I would have flown in the last month, but perhaps she wasn’t expecting the labor that day, and it may have been a lower-altitude flight. But I certainly, twice, was out and around locally, in grocery stores, etc., while having contractions, especially the second time when I knew my system well enough to know that it was going to take me many, many hours before I needed to go to the hospital.

It’s just a coincidence, like the way Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrig’s disease. Sarah’s kids are named for where they were conceived. Track, Bristol (CT), Willow (tree), Piper (airplane) Trig (math class…definitely Bristol’s baby!). Bristol’s other baby, Tripp, was whipped up during a drug binge.
