Not that anyone needs one but the Rt. Rev. Peter Price, the Bishop of Bath and Wells, helpfully provides one more reason why the Church of England should be put out its misery as soon as possible:

Youths who looted shops and torched buildings during last summers riots were having a “spiritual” experience, a senior bishop claimed last night.

Smashing up homes, cars and shops and attacking police were a way of providing “release” and “escape” for troubled young people, according to the Bishop of Bath and Wells, the Rt Rev Peter Price.

He told the Church’s General Synod that the events of last August, which claimed five lives and devastated communities, were “evil”.

Right here, of course, is where the “but” goes.

But he added that it was hardly surprising that young people had turned to mass criminality in England’s major cities because they had been “condemned” to lives with no hope in run-down areas.

He also suggested that consumerist capitalism should also share blame for the actions of those who stole trainers and other designer goods.

He was speaking as he presented an official Church response paper to the riots, which argues that those who took part should not necessarily be blamed for the actions and that we are all responsible.

Of course the fact that some kids smashed your shop windows, stole everything you own and destroyed your business was wrong.  But what good does placing blame do?  After all, in a way, aren’t we all at fault?

It argues that the riots should be understood through the idea of “structural sin” – the theory that wider society should share responsibility for the actions of individuals.

The media that reported the riots and the police that tried to prevent them or arrest lawbreakers must also share a good bit of the blame.

The report also repeatedly attempts to blame the media for what happened and suggests that police were heavy handed.

So when you come right down to it, the very last people anyone in Britain should blame for the riots are the people who did the actual rioting.

It goes on: “We saw how some clergy and others were working with the concept of structural sin which recognises how people on all sides of conflicts can face moral choices that are not between what is clearly right and clearly wrong but which are necessitated by circumstances in response to situations where much has gone wrong already.

The Bible says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.  The Church of England apparently interprets that to mean that all have taken certain actions based on particular situations in which morality is a fluid concept.

“Christian beliefs about sin prevent them from stereotyping others and from dividing the world between good and evil in ways which ignore the complexity of moral contexts.”

Once again, do not get the idea that Price is trying to justify the riots.

Bishop Price told the Synod: “I have no intention of being sentimental about the people, mainly young people, who took to the streets last August and destroyed property, ruined other people’s lives and walked off with looted trophies.”

“Riots embody appalling evil and criminality and those who get drawn in often display great wickedness.

Except when he is.

“The tragedy of our times is that once again we have a large population of young people who are desperate to escape from the constrained lives to which they seem to be condemned.

“Where hope has been killed off and with no prospect of escape, is it surprising that their energies erupt in antisocial and violent actions?

“In a consumer society is it surprising that lusting after high-status goods is seen as a way to find meaning.”

For rent.  Wells Cathedral.  Barely used.

I wish Price was an idiot. Unfortunately, he’s likely reasonably intelligent. He’s just morally bankrupt, spiritually vacant and ethically null and void.

The puerility of attempts to appeal and become relevant to the lowest common denominators in society. Can we now expect the entire younger generation of British people to rush to the Anglican
Church as their protector against their capitalist and social oppressors?

It has been evidenced since human society emerged that young people do NOT want their seniors to be their friends, but rather they look to them to be their guides, teachers and instructors by their examples. Explaining away antisocial behaviour by justifying it with whatever reasons, leads to the creation of a generation of bullies and the undermining of the fabric of society itself.

But then it seems that the guiding principle of Anglicanism/Episcopalianism has now become “Do what you will” rather than the eternal Judeo/Christian truths of social relations and interaction.

If he had said “original sin” rather than “structural sin”, we might have something to talk about.

I think the hooligans should go after his cathedral next. It’s like Celine Dion weeping over the New Orleans looters and how they just want the good stuff they’ve been deprived of.

Funny how she never opens her house for an hour so the underclass can grab some of her goodies.

It’s a “structural societal sin” when they’re stealing someone else’s stuff. It’s a crime when they’re stealing yours.

This is the Sixties (mostly just arriving in Indiana when I was in college in the 70s) notion of “Political Crimes” (which, we were earnestly told, were a sign of idealism) re-packaged. (Packaging? Did I refer to *packaging*? Well, I’ll be dipped.) It is of course just “Crime” if anyone but a leftoid/leftoid protege does it, unless it’s (most recently) “Hate Crime”. And so far they’re getting away with it. These nozzle almost have it in the bag…

Hmmm…so according to this “Opposite-of-a-Horse’s Head,” as I need a new pair of levis, I can go out to Conestoga Mall here in Grand Island and smash some windows, loot a few pairs and then chalk it up as a “spiritual” experience in which I also felt “release?”

Sounds good, except that the Grand Island police might then give me a .44 or .38 caliber “experience.”

I’ll have to do some personal indaba before I can “get” this lofty theology.

My, he’s much too intelligent an arguer for the EcUSA HOB who voted for SSBs in a manner to avoid the trial use required numbers. They are the looters of the heritage. This chap merely approves outright theft. The HOB wants you to go to hell with ‘em.

Grandmother. Here is the speech, not the misquoted words in the Telegraph. You have no reason to be ashamed of your ancestor.

Due to the current heat wave, the coal-powered power plant here in Grand Island has been going full-time.

We are all being kept cool, while dark, swarming, billowing clouds of black, coal-laden smoke have been hovering over the city.

Individual rights at their very most. Thought you would want to know.

My eyes are burning, and my nose is stuffed up, even as we speak.

Hey, if capitalism is going to produce nice stuff, the hooligans are going to knick it — I mean, spiritually experience it. They should probably slap Rev Price in gaol for all the thefts and destruction. It seems he’s already given a confession.

I see the good bishop is channeling Hubert H. Humprhey! (Anyone bu me remember him?) Ol’ Hubert was spouting off the same leftoid babble back in the late 60′s anent the race riots that occurred then.

The reasoning used was stupid then and it is even more stupid now since we’ve had over 40 years’ experience excusing this sort of behavior to show that this worldview is as useless as a broken potsherd.

“In a consumer society is it surprising that lusting after high-status goods is seen as a way to find meaning.”

Well, I can agree with this, at least. He should have followed up with a solid “repent, turn to Christ, store your treasures in heaven.” but.. well..

Hi,

If memory serves, (it doesn’t serve well lately) but one of the criminals came from a very upscale suburb and would drive her fellow thieves in her late model car. Another girl had been selected to represent London in the Olympics and came from a very good family -her mother was so appalled when she saw her daughter on television, she turned her in. That same girl went out after her court appearance and was caught looting again.

How does the good bishop account for the uncounted number of cases where crimes of all sorts are committed by very wealthy and privileged individuals?

It’s basic leftism. The base tenet of leftism is this: Human nature is innately good, only bad circumstances make people go bad. So if something bad happens it’s because EVIL CONSERVATIVES wouldn’t let nanny properly nurture the poor infants.

Dude needs to read his bible once in a while.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

The problem is probably not the coal plant. It’s the weather pattern that’s keeping the smoke low.

And it’s probably not so much the locals requiring A/C power, as all the other power companies across the US that your power company is selling power to. That plant is making money while it can, especially since there can be no new nuclear or coal-fired power plants in the US, under the new regulations. All those electric cars need to get their power somewhere!

Michal

Unfortunately, Maureen, electric cars are pretty much not wanted…hence, there’s no need for a power plant to generate electricity for them. The electricity is, however, needed for all the computers and other gadgets that some people think they need to interface with 24/7.

If only the damage that the current POTUS has done could be undone as easily as it was done!! Maybe the Kool-Aid drinkers will stay home in November.
