COMPARE AND CONTRAST

Monday, January 30th, 2012 | Uncategorized

This past Sunday, a variation of the following letter was read in many Roman Catholic parishes across this country.  This one was read in the Diocese of Marquette, Michigan:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I write to you concerning an alarming and serious matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States directly, and that strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which claims to be “of, by, and for the people,” has just been dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people — the Catholic population — and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that almost all employers, including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer their employees’ health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those “services” in the health policies they write. And almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies.

In so ruling, the Obama Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation’s first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled to either violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so). The Obama Administration’s sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply.

We cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law. People of faith cannot be made second class citizens. We are already joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths and many others of good will in this important effort to regain our religious freedom. Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America’s cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, its enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights. In generations past, the Church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. I hope and trust she can count on this generation of Catholics to do the same. Our children and grandchildren deserve nothing less.

And therefore, I would ask of you two things. First, as a community of faith we must commit ourselves to prayer and fasting that wisdom and justice may prevail, and religious liberty may be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God, nothing is impossible. Second, I would also recommend visiting www.usccb.org/conscience,to learn more about this severe assault on religious liberty, and how to contact Congress in support of legislation that would reverse the Obama Administration’s decision.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
+Alexander K. Sample

States support of “Letting Girls Be Girls” [Girls Not Brides], a global campaign to end child marriage (A&N051)

Rejoice in the establishment of the independent state of the Republic of South Sudan, while deploring “the great human tragedy” still occurring in Abyei, Blue Nile State, and Southern Kordofan State, call upon the U.S. government “to renew and continue its economic sanctions and diplomatic efforts urgently to secure peace and an end to the egregious human rights violations and ongoing military brutality against the people in all areas of the Sudan,” reaffirm solidarity with the Episcopal Church of Sudan, and remind and urge all Episcopalians to continue in prayer and advocacy for all the people of Sudan, especially those in the war torn regions (A&N052)

My problem with Catholics now complaining about this is that they have supported people being here illegally, they’ve been big drivers in social justice, etc. Now their ox is getting gored and they don’t like it.

I agree that this is an attack on religious freedom and needs to be stopped. I just wish that Catholics would show some realization that they are part of the reason we have reached this point.

Except that in this country, the Roman Catholic Church has never been able to compel anyone to agree with its stances on this or that issue. There is a HUGE difference between advocating a particular policy position and legally compelling somebody else to violate his or her own conscience.

What? Was that an emission from Maryland I just heard?

The Catholics of Fort Worth and Dallas had an article in the Fort Worth paper:

http://www.star-telegram.com/2012/01/26/3691131/vann-and-farrell-obama-administration.html

They also had this letter in The Dallas Morning News.

As the shepherds for nearly 2 million Catholics in North Texas, we join Catholic bishops from throughout the United States in strongly calling for Congress to uphold the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution in regard to a new federal rule forcing religious organizations to provide sterilizations, contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs as part of their health care plans.

The First Amendment clearly states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

This outrageous violation of constitutional rights is the latest salvo in the attack on religious freedom by the Obama administration and, sadly, by Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, a Catholic.

This ruling would force Catholic institutions to either violate the fundamental tenets of their faith or stop offering health insurance coverage to their employees, students and clients.

We ask area Catholics, and other people of goodwill, to join us by speaking out for the protection of conscience rights and religious liberty.

The Dioceses of Dallas and Fort Worth, just as every religious organization in the United States, must be allowed to follow the fundamental tenets of their faith without unwarranted government interference.

It’s important to remember that if the government can do this to Catholics, they can do anything to anyone. Contraception is a concern not widely shared by most Christians (heck, not shared by a lot of Catholics). So it’s a relatively easy precedent to set.

” … requesting that companies adopt and implement a comprehensive sustainable palm oil policy”

What in the heck is a ‘sustainable palm oil policy?’ How would you even know if you had one? Oh, wait. A quick Google search reveals this has something to do with Rain Forests. Now I understand. This is just TEC playing the social activist on the assumption that anyone gives a damn about what they say.

Moments in History We Can’t Imagine:

CEO: “The first item on our agenda for this board meeting is responding to TECs call for a “sustainable palm oil policy.”

COO: “I think we must get out our message that we already have a “sustainable palm oil policy.”

Director of Public Affairs: “That’s right. A slow response will hurt our international image.”

CEO: “Well? Do we have a “sustainable palm oil policy?”

COO: “We don’t even make Palm Oil. But we can’t afford to be seen at cross-purposes to an institution as important as TEC.”

I hope it’s clear my comment above should have referred to the Catholic bishops of Ft. Worth and Dallas.

All Christians, indeed, all people of good will, should stand with the Catholics on this one.

If I were the Treasurer of TEC I’d be looking for another job or something to slash my wrists with rather than implement most of these voting instructions. As an aside, if TEC is opposed to putting more mercury into the air then it should be leading the charge against CFLs, which are toxic if broken.

Katherine, you’ve nailed it! Whoever is responsible for carrying out these inane directives must feel like an escapee from Alice in Wonderland’s mad tea party. How they are to keep their eyes from rolling out of their head is an amazing trick in itself.

“remind and urge all Episcopalians to continue in prayer and advocacy for all the people of Sudan, especially those in the war torn regions”

Wait a minute, how did a reference to prayer slip into the treasurer’s report? Please strictly enforce separation of church and state in future!

Executive Council feels called to insure a supply of healthy popcorn at Gen. Con. 2012–and for future General Conventions:

Thanks, Sparky for clearing that up. I was wondering if “Sustainable palm oil policy” had to do with greasing someone’s palm, also known as a bribe.

I don’t know what to tell you, Harry. Sad to see them sucking up like this. Dishonesty never serves anyone at all. And I’d have to think that making the text say what it doesn’t say for the sake of making people feel better would have to be fatal for someone representing the Lord here in the world.

Another nail in the coffin of western culture and civilization as we know it. It is looking more and more like matricide, with the “modern” children, who believe in nothing killing their wise and experienced mother because she stands in the way of of their fullfilling all their basic instincts while killing and exploiting their own unborn children. The forces of Darkness will be walking in to take over without any resistance. The similarities with the themes that brought the collapse of the original Greco/Roman Empire are similar. Those who do not know and learn form their history are bound to repeat it. However the new Dark Age will be far more appalling than the first.
