CLUELESS IN CANTERBURY

Broccoli-shaped archbishop still doesn’t get it:

On the anniversary of the interview in which Dr Rowan Williams said it “seems inevitable” that some parts of sharia would be enshrined in this country’s legal code, he claimed “a number of fairly senior people” now take the same view.

He added that there is a “drift of understanding” towards what he was saying, and that the public sees the difference between letting Muslim courts decide divorces and wills, and allowing them to rule on criminal cases and impose harsh punishments.

When asked at a recent conference of Anglican leaders in Egypt whether he feels he has been vindicated, Dr Williams replied: “It’s been quite interesting to see how a number of fairly senior people have observed that certain kinds of limited aspects of Muslim law are imaginable within a British legal framework, without upsetting the apple cart of undermining human rights.

“People are maybe beginning to distinguish the general question of Muslim law, and the extremes of appalling practice which disfigure it in so many parts of the world or the extremes of trying to push Sharia law upon an entire society.

“So I think there is a drift of understanding of what I was trying to say, perhaps I like to think so.”

Everyone knows that once Britain implements such a system, Muslim women will be able to opt out if they desire since everyone also knows that no people anywhere in the world treats women more respectfully than Muslims.  Ass.  Dr. Williams really needs to cut back on the interfaith “dialogue.”  That stuff rots brains worse than plain-label bourbon.

UPDATE: Looking on the bright side, Dr. Williams making the papers means we can revisit this classic.

Go dig up my dear great-uncle Hubert H. Parry and ask him to add a couple of references to Mecca. Victoria Regina must be clawing at the coffin lid.

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England’s mountains green
And was the Holy Lamb of God
On England’s pleasant pastures seen

And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic mills

Bring me my bow of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spear – O clouds unfold
Bring me my chariot of fire

I will not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
‘Til we have built Jerusalem
In England’s green and pleasant land

Our family considers Blake’s contribution minor, but thats just an egotistical thing.

Wasn’t there a thread here yesterday about the woman who was beheaded up near Buffalo, NY? Well, anyway, FOX news is now reporting that is looks like an honor killing. ROPMA.

Chris, or, really, anyone who knows: will someone (please) explain the “BURMA SHAVE” joke of line 101 in Iowahawk’s linked piece? Is it funny because the ABC is so hirsute? Or is it something else? Is it even appropriate for a young lady to know? I’m dying of curiosity!

Heroine -

It’s funny because Burma Shave ads were a series of billboards that made a rhyme or limerick or something. The last board just said “Burma shave”.

I think I remember Burma Shave ads on the rural highways when I was kid, but I may be remembering people talking about it or things about it on TV.

Oh, I definitely remember the Burma Shave ads. They were a series of smallish signs beside the road, usually four lines of a funny poem with a fifth sign that said “Burma Shave.” Driving from Phoenix to LA through the desert at night was terribly monotonous, and these things were a joy to see.

They were not off-color, not in the 1950s and 1960s. Just funny.

I remember seeing them on some of the back roads up in NH and Maine when I was a kid, too. There are whole websites devoted to the Burma Shave jingles. Some even have pix of the signs.

The ABC is clearly thinking that the lack of anyone acting on the calls for his dismissal for sheer dhimmi-ness is acquiescence to his view. Rather like his handling of the TEC-homo-thingy in the AC.

That, or he’s hedging his bets on being included in the new TEC-Communion and bucking for a Moosleem appointment when Sharia really gets hold of jolly ol’!

Shaped like a broccoli he may be.
But he thinks more like a potato.
