WORSE THAN THE CRIME

Jim Naughton takes note of the continuing interest in the Bede Parry situation and Katharine Jefferts Schori’s part in it:

A story has been making the rounds in the last few days that purports to demonstrate that Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori knew that the Bede Parry, a former Roman Catholic monk, had sexually abused minors and was likely to do so again when she received him as a priest into the Episcopal Church while she was serving as the Bishop of Nevada.

This claim is overblown. Rather, the story is one person’s recounting of a conversation he had with a second person in which the second person allegedly recounted a conversation he had with Bishop Jefferts Schori in which he allegedly informed her of Parry’s past. In a courtroom, this sort of information is hearsay, and inadmissible. In a newsroom, it is a lead—a darn good one, but still only a lead. Those familiar with journalistic standards would know that the information is not publishable, at least by mainstream religion reporters, until confirmed by the man who allegedly had the conversation with Bishop Jefferts Schori.

Jim’s absolutely right, of course.  At this point, all we have is Bruce Marker’s version of his conversations with Abbot Gregory Polan.  Unless and until the Abbot confirms Marker’s story, we don’t have very much.  And Jim’s also correct in stating that the Presiding Bishop could make all this go away tomorrow if she wanted to.

Marker’s story can’t be accepted as factual until it is confirmed. But the existence of such a story, and the fact that it has gained traction with readers who have no ideological axes to grind, suggests that the presiding bishop will not be able to avoid speaking about this matter forever. And thanks to Mr. Marker, Abbot Polan may soon find himself in a similarly untenable position.

In Crisis Communications 101 (a course that exists entirely in my head) one is taught rules for governing the release of bad news: tell it yourself, tell it all, and tell it quickly. These rules apply with special force to organizations whose moral credibility is their stock in trade. I don’t know that the presiding bishop has bad news to deliver, but either way, she would be well advised to put the facts of the Parry case before us.

And the fact that sites like this one have latched on to this story means nothing.

It is no surprise that the Episcopal Church’s ideological adversaries have been all over this issue. We at the Café find ourselves in the unusual position of believing that however overheated their rhetoric and under-sourced their stories, they may be doing the church a greater service in this matter, than the church is doing for itself.

Can’t argue with any of that.  And Jim’s commenters agree.  Obviously, the Presiding Bishop isn’t going to say anything  unless she absolutely has to.  And if Gregory Polan has decided, for whatever reason, to clam up, then speculation about what Katharine Jefferts Schori knew about Bede Parry and when she knew it will continue to fester.  To the detriment of the Episcopal Church.

If Bede Parry were a relative nobody or a mere bit player in the murky sewage pond of RC priestly sexual abuse, it would be one thing, but that is not the case. Parry is a very big and well-known fish in that fetid pool. There are whole pages at several sites cataloging his multiple abuse victims and activities over the years.

Go to: behindthepinecurtain.com/wordpress, conceptionabbeyabuse.com, snaparch.com
bishop-accountability.org for more information on this infamous offender.

Some of these sites have been documenting the abuse for a long time now.

Shori really has no grounds or excuse to plead ignorance, except what can only be called willful ignorance. She had to have intentionally chosen to exercise affirmative action in behalf of the LBGTXYZ-hood (I hesitate to use brother and sisterhood since they have gone beyond such rigid definitions of sexuality according to Gene Robinson) despite his very limited and consequently false confession. From what he claims, Parry only confessed to one incident and did not tell the whole truth about the extent of his offenses.

Shori has employed silence and the public statement of the Bishop of Nevada in an effort to ignore the truth that has arrived at her door. There is already sufficient evidence that she hired a confessed abuser. Think about it. If a prospective employee confessed abuse, wouldn’t you at least have your staff investigate the matter or contact his former employer yourself. She either did not, thus she was negligent or she did investigate, even saw the websites, and/or contacted his employers, but hired him anyway. Either way, she did not use godly wisdom, judgment or spiritual discernment. It was a form of nepotism – sexual orientation nepotism – to be exact.

Whether this last business, the reported conversation, is true or not, is another matter entirely.

How unusual it is for me to be agreeing with Jim Naughton. He’s right. It’s hearsay, but questions have been raised which would be far better answered forthrightly and promptly (and truthfully). If she knew a little, but not the whole, she should get that out there sooner rather than later. We know she knew a little, because she put restrictions on Parry’s ministry when she accepted him. Even if that’s all there is, I question her judgment in accepting him into the Episcopal priesthood at all.

Even if PB Jefferts Schori is culpable she’ll still be PB tomorrow…and the next day… Nobody still in TE{c} is going to ask her to account for her actions. No.Bo.Dy. She gets a pass every time. She has no vested interest in saying anything here. She won’t be compelled by any of the lily-livered TE{c} weasel bishops.

Bennison is still in TEC, correct? And everyone wanted him to go. What are the chances with Schori given that?

I didn’t know that the Episcopal Church had any moral credibility to lose!

I guess I must have missed that in all the furor of the lawsuits over property and the persecution of the orthodox still left within TEC.

You don’t get it. This is a federal crime – and she will do time.

“We know she knew a little, because she put restrictions on Parry’s ministry when she accepted him.”

That’s what is the final straw about this whole thing for me, Katharine. Formerly I thought the best (because only) defence she could mount would be “Look, he told me the reason the RCs kicked him to the curb was because he was gay and they caught him messing around with a couple other seminarians, but since we’re all inclusive and sensitive and New Thing, that’s no bar to ordination in TEC so I said “Welcome aboard” and it’s not my fault he lied to me” but if she put restrictions on access in ministry, then obviously she knew more than she let on, and no way he should have been considered for the clergy in her diocese.
