11

It’s been an interesting week around this town. In game 6 of the World Series, the Cardinals were down to their last strike twice and ended up winning the game and the Series. Today, the New Orleans Saints, one of the best teams in the NFL who put up 62 points against the Colts last week, came into town and got curb-stomped 31-21 by my previously-winless Rams.
Folks here have been having fun with a series of amusing coincidences all revolving around the number 11. Among others, someone pointed out that in the year 2011, the Cardinals won the eleventh world title in their history. David Freese, who hit the Game Six winning home run in the eleventh inning, has eleven letters in his name. And there were a quite a few others.
Anyway, today is the Editorial birthday. Did you do anything special, Johnson? Nah. After the week St. Louis just had, “anything special” wasn’t going to amount to much. Plus I recently got over a week and a half’s worth of panic attacks only to have my gout flare back up so I didn’t feel too much like walking around.
So after the Rams game, I managed to get myself down to my truck, aimlessly drove around south St. Louis County for an hour or so, hit a couple of Starbucks drive-throughs, listened to the Rams post-game show on the radio, had Taco Bell make dinner and went home. At one point, one of guys on the air pointed out that the Rams’ Brandon Gibson, who wears the number 11, had one carry today for 11 yards.
Then it hit me. Today I turned 56 years old. When you add the numbers 5 and 6, what sum do you get?
Just sayin’.

Happy Birthday! I am so glad you are here…

Happy birthday, and congrats on the sports victories, and best wishes for an early end to the gout episode.
And don’t dwell on the numerology too much. I’d hate to see you turn into Louis Farrakhan.
October 30, 2011
Christopher has 11 letters.
October 30, 2011
Those aren’t panic attacks – it’s too much caffeine. Happy birthday!
October 30, 2011
Happy birthday, my friend.
October 30, 2011
Happy birthday, Johnson!
October 30, 2011
All the best to you! And congrats to your Cardinals and all their fans!

Happy Birthday!!!
October 30, 2011
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! And have you tried cherry juice for the gout?? It has helped people I know.
Not yet, Ann. But I’ll keep an eye out for it.
Happy birthday, Chris!

Cake, candles, you know the drill.
October 30, 2011
Happy birthday, brother Chris.
We cheered for the Cardinals on your behalf, and wow that Thursday evening game was exciting.
October 30, 2011
Rangers lost. (11 letters.)
October 30, 2011
Oh, and happy birthday Christopher!
Many Happy Returns of the Day. May this next year be better than all other ones put together. And may you post even more (if such a thing is humanly possible).
October 30, 2011
Happy birthday. Go and put a stout load in a Hawken rifle and wake up he neighbors!
October 30, 2011
Happy birthday Chris! Keep up the good work! May God grant you many years.
And Veteren’s Day this year is 11/11/11, and it falls on Friday, which is the 6th day of the week in Jewish calculations but could also be considered the 5th day if Sunday becomes the new Sabbath. And we have already established what 6 and 5 make.
Oh, and there were only 11 faithful apostles.
Numerology is FUN!! Now if you’ll excuse me I have to turn on and off the light in my room 11 times.
Happy Birthday!
Was hoping for a rematch of your Cards with our Tigers, but it was not to be. Glad for your sake they could pull it out. Enjoy your celebrations.
peace,
Zach

Happy Birthday, CJ. I, too, have heard cherry juice does the trick. But, I would try bourbon before cherry juice. For one thing, it costs less per ounce. And there are better side effects.
October 30, 2011
P.S. How many letters are there in “Jack Daniels”?
CC,
I think I’ll go the cherry juice route. I’m still on anti-anxiety meds and I discovered that having a glass of bourbon before bed while taking those can make me sleep a WHOLE lot longer than I want to. So I’m completely off the sauce for the foreseeable future.
Thanks, Zach. I was hoping for another Series against the Yankees. I hate playing teams that I’d otherwise root for if the Cardinals weren’t playing.
October 31, 2011
Many happy returns, Christopher, and congratulations on your triumphant conquering team!
I have no advice on the gout, but much sympathy on the panic attacks – my dad used to get them and yeah, no fun at all.
Glad you were able to get out and drive around – that’s a big thing when the anxiety/agoraphobia/heebie-jeebies sets in and I’m relieved you’re over the worst of it.
October 31, 2011
!!Eleventy!1! Happy Birthday!
Many happy returns of the day, my man! Goofin’ around with numbers can be fun. Just don’t make an obnoxious habit of it.
May your gout be gone quickly and here is hoping your panic attacks are mastered soon. Those can be really traumatic. I’ve had to deal with various family members who suffered from those.
October 31, 2011
Happy Birthday to you. I feel for you and the panic attacks – I only get them if I have to drive on the interstate. I’ve tried various remedies, but alas, no luck.
October 31, 2011
Happy Birthday! May God bless you!
October 31, 2011
Happy Belated Birthday Chris!
October 31, 2011
Happy Birthday! Your writing reveals so much moer about you than your theo/political views. Please know that you are much loved and appreciated!
October 31, 2011
As a long time Detroit Tigers Fan (I am your age and still talk about the 1968 World Series) I wish you congrats on the victory and Happy Birthday.
October 31, 2011
Many congratulations, Mr. J!
I had many gout attacks from summer 2008 to spring 2010. I’ve been taking turmeric capsules since early summer 2010 and haven’t had an attack since.
I was hoping this would be the year Matt Holliday had a great postseason, but he has too many letters. Maybe next year.
October 31, 2011
Happy birthday, dear Mr. MCJ editor, and thanks for all your work and humor!
October 31, 2011
Hope your birthday was a Great One!!! Your blog has provided many enjoyable hours of browsing for me and mine.
I, too am overjoyed the Cardinals won (although a granddaughter now living in Milwaukee isn’t so happy)! St. Louis is one of my home towns (Army brat). The Rams victory is truly icing on the cake!
As for the number 11…well, 11:11 (a.m. or p.m.) has always been lucky for me. Glad to hear of a fellow Elevener!
October 31, 2011
Happy day after your day! How about some toasted ravioli and a concrete for the gout?
(And I second what Russell+ said. I think we may know you better than you might realize!)

Congratulations, and many happy returns of the day.
Happy birthday, Chris. I suspect it was providential that you were born on Devil’s Night. I can certainly think of a certain presiding bishop or two who would think you the devil’s spawn, if they believed in such medieval superstitions.

I’m one of your many fans who is wishing you a happy birthday & sends thanks for all you do.

@Christopher (our esteemed host),
I did the math and I got b. (But then I tend to do quite a bit of math in hexadecimal.)
On a more serious note (and slightly belated), Happy Birthday, and may our Lord grant you many more happy ones.
Pax et bonum,
Keith Töpfer

And to complete the post by Barney:
“And many hippo returns.”
October 31, 2011
Good point about bases, MA. Chris is only 38 in hexadecimal.
For Halloween tonight you should go disguised as a 55 year old.
They’ll never know it’s you.
Happy Birthday. Another year closer to glory.
October 31, 2011
happy birthday and congratulations from a long-time lurker, (someone who reads but never comments)!
your posts are always informative and often amusing. in case I never post again, I just want to say: God bless you and your pursuit of the truth, wherever it leads you.

Hey, Chris, today’s Wall St. Journal has an article about people who retired to a small town in western Kansas. They love it. If you can’t read the link I’ll email it to you (might be subscribers only).
Thanks for the link, Katherine. I got to read the whole article. Going to have to look up where St. Francis is. It pretty much nails the reason why I’d like to wrap it up out there. Moving out there would give me the two things I most want out of life. Peace and quiet.
October 31, 2011
Sounds good, Chris. But get an internet line and blog. You’ve got a lot of friends out here, you know.
Assuming I get to do it(a big if at this point), retirement’s a good ways off, Katherine, and right now, western Kansas is a pipe dream. I expect I’ll drop dead at my Webster Groves Public Library desk. Hopefully, that’ll happen at our renovated original site and not the converted warehouse they’ve got us in now. But that’s up in the air since renovation has completely stopped because our contractor bailed out and we have to find a new one.
October 31, 2011
Happy Birthday!
Another ominous 11: Tony retires
October 31, 2011
That would be exciting indeed for the patrons. I hope something more pastoral is in your future, but the Lord is ready to meet us under all circumstances.
Pretty sad in these days for a contractor to walk away from work.
October 31, 2011
Happy birthday, Chris, and many many more.
How is 56? For some reason, I’m not really looking forward to it in December. I just don’t like the sound of it.
It’s not much different than 55. It’s just that you and I have both started down the other side of the hill.
November 1, 2011
I have made a momentous decision.
November 1, 2011
I have decided to make the 56th comment in this thread.
November 1, 2011
I only logged on to note that there were 56 comments, Ed. So this will be the eleventy-first.

I was wondering when we’d get a chance to scream, yell, and ululate about the great Cardinals victory!
Happy Birthday, Chris!
But even more inportantly, HOW BOUT THEM CARDINALS!!!!!!! GOOOOOOOOO, TEAM!!!!!!
November 2, 2011
Happy belated birthday, Chris!
