HORST WESSEL DAY
Sunday, July 3rd, 2011 | Uncategorized
Planning on celebrating the Fourth tomorrow? Maybe get some brats on the barbecue while knocking back a few with the neighbors? Wander over to watch the local fireworks display before coming home and setting off a few of your own, that kind of thing? We hope you have fun, you stupid fascist:
Democratic political candidates can skip this weekend’s July 4th parades. A new Harvard University study finds that July 4th parades energize only Republicans, turn kids into Republicans, and help to boost the GOP turnout of adults on Election Day.
“Fourth of July celebrations in the United States shape the nation’s political landscape by forming beliefs and increasing participation, primarily in favor of the Republican Party,” said the report from Harvard.
“The political right has been more successful in appropriating American patriotism and its symbols during the 20th century. Survey evidence also confirms that Republicans consider themselves more patriotic than Democrats. According to this interpretation, there is a political congruence between the patriotism promoted on Fourth of July and the values associated with the Republican party. Fourth of July celebrations in Republican dominated counties may thus be more politically biased events that socialize children into Republicans,” write Harvard Kennedy School Assistant Professor David Yanagizawa-Drott and Bocconi University Assistant Professor Andreas Madestam.

I remember all the injured squeals over the idea that leftists are anti-American. Now Harvard comes along and says it’s true. Did they think about this before allowing its publication?

I knew there was a reason why I enjoy the parade on the fouth and wave my little flag when the color guard goes by.

Tomorrow, at 11:15 AM, there will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence in fron of the Lexington City Hall, which we plan on attending before we wade into the brats, funnel cakes and icy cold ones. Liberal friends said they would meet us at the parade, which starts at one. I asked if they were going down early for the reading, and she looked at me with a look of bewilderment on her face. “Now why,” she asked, “would I do that?”
When I read your suggestions regarding “brats on the barbecue,” I thought of some of the children in my neighborhood.
Happy Fourth, Chris!

I always have my adopted Montagnard family to my house on holidays. I generally use the national day prayer (1928 of course) which includes the line:
“Defend our liberties and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues.”
Surrounded by the legal immigrants who risked their lives to come to America I always have to concentrate very hard to keep my voice from breaking at that line.
Advance America. Love live the cause of Freedom.

Idiot me. “Long Live” not “Love Live”. Sorry,
July 3, 2011
Patriotism is a funny thing. We are definitely to put first the Kingdom of God, i.e., our first allegiance is to Christ and His Body. At the same time, we are to love the place God has put us and work to preserve it.
We sang “God Bless America” this morning at Mass. It wasn’t in the program, but our guest priest just started it after the announcements and despite what you have heard, Catholics can sing.
What does it mean for God to bless America? We protect the in utero murder of more than a million babies per year. The family has been re-defined not just by same-sex “marriage”, but by no-fault divorce with concomitant serial monogamy, deliberate single parenthood, and an economic system, with social pressures, that virtually requires both parents to work. Avarice is celebrated, as are all of the deadly sins. Advertising, which is the engine powering our news and entertainment media, promotes lust, gluttony, and pride.
If I hear “decadent” used as a positive value on one.more.advertisement…
Ok, why this rant? Because I actually love this country and want it to survive? Will God turn His face from our sins forever? Can we escape the wrath to come? Has any nation?
Democrats have, for a generation now, attracted an elitist constituency that is willing to enumerate the faults of this country, not from love, but to puff up their own egos and demonstrate their moral superiority. It just feels good to be better than the hoi polloi. They are in it for “me”, with only the most theoretical concern for the “we”. Now Republicans are just about as bad in the narcissism department, but there are some real conservatives left in the party who have some sense and integrity. The good news is that there are a LOT of independents of conservative leanings, enough to win a few elections.
Well, I got all choked up on God Bless America, although I now have “I am an Anglican” on my mind and it’s driving me crazy. I would have loved more patriotic songs this morning: all verses of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”, maybe. We did do “Eternal Father, Strong to Save”, which we do a lot, Father David being ex-Navy and all.
So a Happy Fourth to CJ and everyone reading this.

Love live the cause of Freedom.
That works, Kelso.
July 3, 2011
“Love live the cause of Freedom.”
And, regrettably, there is a lot of dieing involved…
“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

Am on my way out front to decorate the Liberty Tree
(a small Redbud which we cover with RWB mylar stars etc) and post *Proud To Be An American* and *Thank You Vets* signs, flags, etc etc…..as to the reason Harvard pointed the above out, I really would suspect: so as to lay some groundwork for leftoids to go after Fourth Of July in the courts, since sneering at it (etc) has not worked………the WI & IN union scraps are confirmation that the unions are not going to go quietly, and their masters may not, either…..If it ever comes to it, may God give us the resolve to put our lives/fortunes/sacred honor on the line too……Happy 4th to all here!……We of course have bought our July 4th “arsenal”…Harvard etc. will take our fireworks when they pry them from our S’mores-smeared dead hands LOL! USA USA USA USA !

Happy 4th Johnson – after years of scorching in the fine St. Louis tradition we now do our utmost to avoid the crowds and stay indoors. But Webster has one of the finest community celebrations in the area. Enjoy!!
July 3, 2011
I just cannot agree with the premise of the assistant professor. In my experience the real patriots have been the Democrats, the steelworkers, auto workers, machinists and your basic union worker. But I am one of them and have always celebrated the 4th and have tried to instill patriotism in my children.

John
It’s Harvard’s Kennedy School of Political Stuff, they have to be right sometime.
Besides, John Adams was right.
Cheers

Ther’s yer pro’lem rat ther.
The head of the county hospital here (with an almost one-billion-dollar new building underway) believes that the budget meanies are confusing birth control with abortion when they cut the budget for that as well for the coming year. He warned that we might have more babies next year. The horror! The horror!
July 3, 2011
The next cause du jour: Figuring out a way to ban children from 4th of July celebrations, ’cause it’ll turn them into raging conservatives. Or something.
That, or lefties, many of whom do not have jobs, will co-opt 4th of July parades with their own politics.
July 3, 2011
“The political right has been more successful in appropriating American patriotism”
How does one appropriate patriotism? Patriotism is instilled or innate but not “appropriated”.
God bless America, the land I, and many others, love.
Happy 4th all.
July 3, 2011
I sent 32 years defending Harvard’s right to be stupid and wrong…. I am pleased to see that they still excel at this.
July 3, 2011
So, why — if the liberal elitist academic left is so smart — did they not recognize the glaring implicit admission in this article?
By the way, Chris and David, we only barbecue the liberal brats on Independence Day.
July 3, 2011
“By the way, Chris and David, we only barbecue the liberal brats on Independence Day.”
All of them? That’s gotta take longer than just one day.
Very good observations FW Ken. I love this country but I can not be blind to how our sins place a in real bondage even while we celebrate our independence as a nation.
July 4, 2011
John, it’s not the premise, it’s the conclusion.
July 4, 2011
It wasn’t the Fourth of July celebrations that turned me into a conservative radical, it was the demonstrated dislike for the country (and everything our military veterans fought for) by leftists that accomplished that feat! Civis Americana sum! Happy Independence Day everyone!!
July 4, 2011
Does anyone remember a complaint by Democrats that the number of Republicans increased by about 2% after bringing Fox News into a area? They think it means that listening to the “lies” of Fox News deludes people into eeeevil conservatissm. A conservative thought might be that being exposed to a different point of view might cause people to reject the “lies” of the mainstream media, leading them also into the arms of the eeeevil conservatives. I’m always amazed at the human ability to look at the same thing and come out with completely opposite conclusions.
July 4, 2011
Paula, we only barbecue as many brats as we and our right-wing, Republican, Neanderthal friends can eat.
Perhaps we need to fire up more grills.
July 4, 2011
JM, That reads as a most sensible plan. In my younger days a game of Jarts played with rather inebriated grownups took care of the problems of brats on the 4th of July. But summer is now supposed to be safe taking away so many chances for the culling of bratdom. I commend you for having your grill at the ready.
Happy Fourth to you all and may God have mercy on this country of ours! We have fallen so low and know not what we do.
July 4, 2011
I know how to make 4 July relevant to the liberals:
Change the theme of the Parade to the Gay Independence Parade with all the Gay Mardi Gras trimmings. Better timing anyway because it is much warmer.
July 5, 2011
The liberals show the slimy lizard mind at work at its cold hearted best: all they are interested in is indoctrination, so that is the grid by which they interpret all events, even an innocent an wholesome one like celebrating United States independence.
These people are beneath contempt. They are a disgusting example of what socialist brain damage can do to ones’ soul.
