DOG BITES MAN

How many of these are we up to now? Seventy-five or so?
US Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has bungled the deposition of Fort Worth Bishop Jack Iker, scholars from the Anglican Communion Institute (ACI) have charged.
The presiding bishop has either violated church law, or created a legal precedent that prevents disciplinary proceedings against any other cleric who “abandons the Communion” of the Episcopal Church, the ACI’s theologians and canon lawyers have charged.
The Dec 11 claim by the ACI, a center right group of American theologians and scholars that has opposed both the secession of conservatives in the Episcopal Church and the leftward drift of the church hierarchy, has come in response to the presiding bishop’s deposition of Bishop Iker through the use of the renunciation canon—a clause in American canon law that permits the voluntary laicizing of a cleric for reasons of conscience.
On Dec 11, the ACI charged Bishop Schori had abused and contorted the canons, and “inexplicably conceded that Bishop Iker has not violated the Constitution and Canons of TEC and that he is no longer subject to its discipline. This clearly unintended consequence not only will have serious implications for any future litigation in Fort Worth, it once again calls into question the canonical validity of numerous actions she has taken over the past year.”
Bishop Schori had led the US church “not merely into canonical abuse and usurpation of power but into canonical chaos and institutional disintegration. Unless checked, this chaos will have grave implications for the future of the Communion as a whole,” they said.
Gee. YA THINK?!!
I guess it’s no secret that I’ve lost what little faith I ever had in the “inside strategy” mainly because I’m not at all clear on exactly what it involves. I hear a lot about waiting for the Anglican Covenant, something the Episcopal Organization won’t even consider until 2012 if Mrs. Schori has her way.
No doubt, somebody at next year’s GenCon will propose taking up the Covenant, someone else will second and the question will be ruled out of order for reasons which may or may not be made clear.
And since TEO has already indicated that it will never agree to a meaningful Covenant, it’s also clear that whatever version of the Covenant eventually sees the light of day will have to gum its food.
So while I don’t know what the inside strategy involves, I know what it most emphatically doesn’t involve. Any sort of meaningful action, particularly one that might be construed as confrontational.
Take the ACI report mentioned above. One would think that canon violations by a bishop, even a Presiding Bishop, are a serious matter. And I have no doubt that ACI’s case is a strong one. I also have no doubt that not a single Waste Of A Perfectly Good Crozier Communion Partner Bishop will ever do anything at all with it.
What’s the point of filing charges? You know perfectly well how such a trial will turn out. Then what’s the point of writing reports like this? And what’s the point of remaining connected to a church whose leadership is allowed to behave in an illegal manner without anyone at all raising any kind of an objection?
Let me bottom line it for you inside strategists. Show me(I am a Missourian after all) that you’re capable of actually doing something and I’ll start to see you as a little more than a sad, pathetic, cowardly joke.

You file a presentment because you believe an presentable offense has occurred. When – not if – the charges go nowhere, you shout to the heavens about the corrupt judicial process. If you are lucky, they file a presentment against you and you are an excommunicated martyr (professionally, that is – no theatrics, please!) and God will bless your cause.
Show me(I am a Missourian after all)
Heh.
Great post. I still fail to see why any “conservative” would oppose secession from TEO given its hostility to any dissent from the party line, but then again, I fail to see lots of stupid things.

CJ: “Let me bottom line it for you inside strategists. Show me(I am a Missourian after all) that you’re capable of actually doing something and I’ll start to see you as a little more than a sad, pathetic, cowardly joke.“
Inside “strategists” = Sad, Pathetic, Cowardly Joke.
Good summation. I used to call them Institutional-Enablers of soul-destroying heresy and apostasy, but I changed it now to Institutional Idolator-Enablers of soul-destroying heresy and apostasy.
Naturally, being a prize pupil of Dale Carnegie’s course in “How to Win Friends and Influence People” I’ll proceed to identify these aiders and abetters of institutional heresy and apostasy. So without further ado in my zeal for popularity, these inside “strategists” are Dr. Christopher Seitz, Dr. Ephraim Radner, Dr. Philip Turner, Dr. Kendall Harmon, Bishop Marc Lawrence, Bishop John Howe, Bishop “Fearless” MacPherson, Bishop Dorsey Henderson, Bishop Wimberly, Jackie Bruschi, Sarah Hey, Fr. Rob Eaton, Deacon Phil Snyder, and all the Communion Partner rectors and bishops.
(1) Many, if not all of them, have admitted that they’re not reforming TEc. They claim that they are a “witness”. Begging the questions: A witness to what? A witness of what? A witness like Lot’s wife?
(2) If you want to be a witness and a leader who cares for the souls of others, then be a witness like Bishops Schofield, Iker, Duncan, and Ackerman, and Fr. Matt Kennedy. Lead your flock, your loved ones, your friends, your neighbors OUT of institutional apostasy and heresy.
(3) Don’t deceive yourselves that as a member of TEc that you hold to a catholic ecclesiology. And that by separating you are committing schism which is worse than heresy. That is delusionally stupid. A form of stupidity disguised by eloquent sophistry that Radner and his fellow self-strokers at the Covenant-Communion blog engage in, and to which Ed the Roman always asks: Why aren’t you guys swimming the Tiber if schism is so bad? What’s happening in TEc is far worse than what started the Reformation.
(4) There’s actually two naked emperors here. One is obviously the heretics and apostates who are running TEc and much of the Church of England. The other one is the inside “strategists” and their belief in +++Rowan Williams, his successor, the Covenant process, and meaningless and ineffectual diarrheal documents splurted out on a regular basis from ACI like the one that this post is based upon.
You need more Athanasius’s and a lot less Chamberlains. And the courage to say that the rough equivalents of Hitler and Chamberlain are both very naked. And that they are to mocked, laughed at, and fought against. This large group would consist of Susan Russell, Bishop Chane, Bishop Bruno, archflamingo KJS, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, Dr. Seitz, Dr. Radner, et al. The apostates and their enablers must both be contended against, distasteful and painful as it is. If lacking the courage, then you’ll have more farces like the New Orleans HOB meeting in 2007, the 9/30/07 deadline, Lambeth 2008, and the upcoming GC 2009 in Anaheim.
Truth Unites… and Divides
December 23, 2008
Folks, I am convinced there never really was an inside strategy. Oh, ACI, StandFirm, and Kendall Harmon notwithstanding. Unless you count as strategy the statement, “We’re pursuing an inside strategy.” Or, “We’re staying to promote witness to the faith once delivered and classical, historical Anglicanism.” Uh, where’s the witness?
Friends, on its current trajectory, TEC/TEO is dying on the vine awaiting the moment of pruning and tossing into the fire.
I call it the ‘Banquo’s Ghost’ strategy – the insiders are dead, but they’re going to sit at the victors’ table and glower balefully. Unfortunately, Macbeth had a conscience, whereas the Schori junta has none, so this “strategy” will have less than no effect.

TUAD…you said it better than me, so I won’t say anything else.

The inside strategy is will turn the church into my family of origin. The smoke and distorted cracked mirrors that exist in a family, individual or group where some deny and distort the truth creates confusion and conflict and a disorienting, unstable, ambivalent and toxic environment. Neither adults or children should have to worship in such a place where the only absolutes of life are subtly cast into doubt (just like in Eden)
Such a Church does not honor The One who is the SINGLE Only True Word, Whose own being is THE definer of Truth, Love and Life.

Come on, why didn’t she include a picture of herself in her holiday mitre and cope? We need another MCJ Name-the-tragic-clerical-garb contests.
December 23, 2008
whoops…wrong thread…wrong blog. sorry folks. Well, we DO need another contest anyway…
Merry Christmas all.

Schori, et al may have violated the canons, but they can continue to rule by capricious fiat. No institution in the Episcopal organization will hold them to account. The only possible downside that I can see for TEO is that its lawlessness may adversely impact litigation in the civil courts,
December 23, 2008
Maybe all the inside strategists are just gathering their forces so they can do a realllllly effective intervention and force KJS and the TEO to confront the truth about their damaging behavior.
“Katie, you have become dependent upon deposing bishops you disagree with. We are going to have to take away your signet ring and sealing wax…”

Athanasius Returns and Dr. Mabuse have it right — there either was no strategy, or it’s a pathetic one. You can’t shame people who have no shame.
No one has ever shown me a way to remain both a Christian and a member of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina.
